Man rescued after boat capsizes on Fraser River

FRASER RIVER (NEWS 1130) — A peaceful afternoon of fishing went wrong when a man’s boat capsized in Fraser River near Surrey Sunday afternoon.

A Coquitlam man had to be rescued after his small inflatable fishing boat was toppled by a wave from a tug boat.

Luke Uytdehaag with Harken Towing rescued the man after he had climbed up out of the water onto a boom near Barnston Island.

He says it’s a good thing the man was wearing a life jacket.

“You could tell he was in shock, his face was pretty blue,” he says. “You could tell he was definitely in the water because of the colour of his skin.”

Paramedics were there to help once he was brought back to land, but he apparently didn’t want their help.
