New Transit Police Chief says weekend SkyTrain hours should be extended

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Should SkyTrain hours on weekends be extended? The new Transit Police Chief believes so.

Dave Jones says taking the SkyTrain is safer than driving, especially for those tempted to drive after a night out.

“Any time you can continue to move people on something that’s really safe and reliable, then you’re always not only going to think of saving lives, you will be doing that,” he says.

Jones, who is entering his first week as Chief of the Metro Vancouver Transit Police, says he’s ready to meet with TransLink about the operating hours.

But, he says those who are calling for change need to understand overnight may be the best time for necessary maintenance work to get done.

“When something is working well, people want it to work all the time, not understanding that you do have to take time to shut it down and conduct maintenance on it,” he says.

Right now, the last train from downtown leaves Waterfront at around 1:15 a.m. on weekends.
