11-month-old in hospital after apparent fall at Vancouver Island daycare

VANCOUVER ISLAND (NEWS 1130) – The parents of a little girl are worried their 11-month-old might have permanent brain damage after an alleged incident at a Vancouver Island daycare.

The Langford mom, only going by Kate in an online GoFundMe page for her daughter, says she was told by the daycare her daughter Sophie had had a fall, but shortly after pickup the baby started projectile vomiting.

Kate took Sophie to the hospital where she says a CT scan revealed a possible skull fracture and brain haemorrhage.

“The team decided that it was best for Sophie to be transferred to BC Children’s Hospital for the best possible care and monitoring,” said the GoFundMe. “If the pressure in Sophie’s brain builds up from the internal bleeding, it is possible that she will require neurosurgery.”

Once at the hospital, it says further testing revealed Sophie had also sustained hemorrhaging at the back of her eyes.

Kate posted an update on Facebook thanking everyone for their support. (Kate/Facebook)

West Shore RCMP confirms there is an investigation into the matter, noting its serious crimes unit has taken over.

“Details of exactly what’s being investigated are not going to be released at this time,” said Cst. Nancy Sagger. “We also aren’t going to name the daycare, although we have contacted the authorities that look after the child and family welfare and we’ve alerted them to our investigation as well.”

No charges have been laid and the daycare is said to be cooperating with the investigation.

Family daycare

Minister of Children and Family Development Katrine Conroy confirmed the Langford daycare was a family daycare.

“I can’t talk specifics about the case but what I can tell you in situations like this that it would be the licensing that would be investigating which is the Health Authority,” Conroy added. “My heart goes out to that family I can’t imagine what they’re going through.”

The ministry has received a report about the incident and says it’s assessing whether a child protection investigation is required.
