BC ferry suffered ‘extensive damage’ during Langdale dock incident

LANGDALE (NEWS 1130) – The Queen of Surrey will be out of service for at least a few more weeks as staff try to repair the damage done to the ship after it hit a dock at the Langdale terminal last week.

BC Ferries says the ship suffered “extensive damage,” noting it will need substantial repairs before it’s ready to sail again.

“There is damage to the car deck, the steering gear compartment as well as the rudder and some other items,” said Deborah Marshall with BC Ferries.

She said, unlike the ship, the Langdale dock suffered minor damage.

“Once we get the vessel into the dry dock we’ll get a full assessment of the repairs that are required and a definite repair plan as well as a date when we expect that ship to be back in service but it will be some time before the Surrey is back in service,” Marshall added.

Investigators are also trying to figure out what caused the incident that left passengers stranded for several hours aboard the ship. But Marshall said it will be at least a month before the cause is known.

Another ferry has taken the Queen of Surrey’s place, so the sailing schedule has not changed
