Do Jody Wilson-Raybould and Jane Philpott have a future in politics beyond the fall federal election?

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Do Jody Wilson-Raybould and Jane Philpott have a future in politics beyond the fall federal election?

The two former Liberal caucus members haven’t stated their intentions yet, but Green Party leader Elizabeth May said earlier this week she’d welcome both.

What about the NDP and Conservatives? Not in their current ridings, according to University of Ottawa political scientist Dr. David Moscrop.

“The NDP in the past hasn’t been open to floor-crossers,” he says. “You’d have to imagine that these two would have to go through nomination contests. I wouldn’t be surprised if the Conservatives would welcome either of these women. I’d be a little bit more surprised if either of these women went over to the Conservatives.”

To run as Greens he says, they’d also likely have to switch ridings.

“They might be able to move, but it’s not obvious to me that just being who they are they can drive the race that much.”

Neither Philpott nor Wilson-Raybould have said what their political futures hold or whether or not they’re considering running for re-election.

“They would have a snowball’s chance in hell of getting elected as independents,” Moscrop continues. “The system doesn’t allow it in this country. I mean technically it allows it but, it doesn’t work.”

He adds things like nomination deadlines and local pushback from the idea of parachuting new candidates into ridings are other barriers.
