RCMP faces ‘significant challenges’ in money laundering fight: deputy commissioner

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – The RCMP needs to be modernized and transformed in order to fight money laundering.

That’s the RCMP’s response to a shocking report by the government of British Columbia that found there are no federal Mounties dedicated to fighting money laundering in the province.

Deputy Commissioner Gilles Michaud issued a statement Monday evening confirming the national police force needs change.

“As the report highlights, the RCMP faces significant challenges and pressures in delivering federal policing services to Canadians,” he says. “However, this requires transforming and modernizing the RCMP in a variety of areas that cut across the organization and impact all types of investigations.

He says a national resourcing strategy is in the works to better deliver results.

“At this time, we are working on a national resourcing strategy to better position the RCMP to deliver results across its federal mandate, including money laundering and other financial crime.”

Michaud also says the RCMP will keep re-evaluating to make sure resources are dedicated where they’re needed most.

B.C. Attorney General David Eby says greater Vancouver has become a haven for this type of crime and that’s why he’s demanding most new funding promised in the federal budget should immediately come to B.C.

He says there’s no excuse for the lack of action after two years of media headlines highlighting that organized crime is laundering billions of dollars in illegal cash in the province.
