Rising prices, new Canada Food Guide making family meal-planning tough

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Rising food prices are putting more pressure on low-income households — and so is the new Canada Food Guide.

New research from the Angus Reid Institute finds families with household incomes under $50,000 are considerably more likely to have chosen less healthy, cheaper options — or, they may have cut back on meats and vegetables in response to what the pollster calls their “affordability woes.”

The poll also finds Canadians are divided about diets. While about half (48%) say it’s easy to eat healthy if they try to, the same percentage say it’s a difficult task.

The research firm also says about half of the respondents across various income levels say it’s now more difficult to afford food compared to a year ago — something academics told us was likely when the new food guide was unveiled.

Most Canadians say with diet recommendations constantly changing, it’s hard to keep track of what is considered “healthy.”

However, the poll does find most Canadians do believe the guide is important for schools and creating diet plans for young children, as well as community organizations that are involved in nutrition.
