Could golf course land in Vancouver be better used?

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – There could eventually be some changes to the three 18-hole golf courses and the three pitch-and-putt courses in Vancouver.

It’s not a sure thing, but one Park Board commissioner wants a clear picture on the current and potential future benefits of the courses.

Dave Demers says he’s not looking for the courses to go away, acknowledging it’s a popular sport in the city.

“I can foresee multiple ways to improve the situation for all citizens in Vancouver and ensure that golf services we offer remain the same — if not better,” he said.

However, he does say statistics that go back to the 1990s, the golfing at public courses has been on a steady decline. “We’ve lost about 30 per cent attendance from the 1990s, compared to the last few years.”

Demers says potential changes include adding a trail for cyclists and birdwatchers at the Langara course in the off-season.

Would that mean downsizing courses to make room for other activities? Demers says he’s very open to the idea, adding he’s heard demand for a shorter courses.

“[It] would allow a faster game. An 18-hole course, I think, takes three or four hours — depending on how fast you are at playing — which is restricting for a lot of people. So, if we had an executive course, maybe that could open the door to that many more players. Of course, that’s an option I’m open to.”

Demers also suggests the Park Board could consider different prices for kids or seniors looking to golf at public courses.

He’s just asking for information, at this point. His motion will go before the board on Monday.
