Have your say: City launches open house to discuss future of Granville Bridge

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Friday is the first day you have a chance to have your say on the future of the Granville Bridge.

The City of Vancouver’s Lon Laclaire says the crossing is getting a major renovation to make it more pedestrian-friendly.

“The primary driver for this project is really the walking environment — if you’ve ever walked over the bridge, you’ll know what I mean. We have a lot of development happening at the north end of the bridge, we think there’s going to be a lot more people interested in walking around the bridge. The kind of barrier that it presents right now is going to become more of a glaring issue.”

He notes some of the challenges for people who walk across the bridge include narrow sidewalks, among other issues and concerns.

“You’re right next to high-speed traffic, there are locations where you have to cross the traffic on the off ramps, the people in wheelchairs generally can’t use the bridge.”

The open house on the bridge’s future runs from 11:00 a.m. until 7:00 p.m. on Friday at the CityLab at 511 West Broadway.

You’ll also be able to give your input online.

“We’re really asking people to tell us what they like about the bridge, what they don’t like about the bridge, to give us their ideas in terms of what they’d like to see changed. As a first phase, it’s pretty open in terms of what you can provide for your thoughts and feedback.”

According to the city, the Granville Bridge was originally designed for “high-volume freeways that were never built.”

Additional open houses will be held on April 13th, from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at City Lab, as well as on April 16th from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on the Vancouver Public Library Promenade.
