Anonymous tips lead to a dozen gangster arrests in Metro Vancouver

METRO VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) — Twelve gang members have been arrested over the past year thanks to tips received by Metro Vancouver’s Crime Stoppers.

Crime Stoppers executive director Linda Annis says she’s proud of ongoing campaigns targeting organized crime.

“Over the past year, we’ve had 12 gang members arrested as the result of Crime Stoppers tips and about 150 guns or weapons have been recovered as well,” she says.

She says making sure the privacy of the people wanting to stay anonymous when reporting crime is key.

“It’s critical. I think, often times, people don’t report because they’re afraid for their personal safety, and by using Crime Stoppers your anonymity is guaranteed right through to the Supreme Court of Canada,” she says. “If someone’s arrested and they’re charged and they go to court, you don’t have to go. They will never know who it was that reported them.”

Tips have also started coming in thanks to the latest campaign targeting the girlfriends of gangsters, featuring the slogan “I Stashed My Boyfriend’s Gun,” which have been running since November.

She says the numbers are still being crunched on how successful those ads have been.
