Woman arrested at YVR, believed to be part of travelling theft group

RICHMOND (NEWS 1130) – Mounties in Richmond believe a woman who was arrested at YVR airport this week is part of an organized group stealing valuables from people at airports.

Officers arrested the 60-year-old woman at around 10 a.m. on Wednesday. She’s accused of stealing a purse from a passenger in the international arrivals terminal.

Investigators think she may be part of a larger ring of thieves who are travelling between airports.

RCMP say over the past month, they have been sending plainclothed officers to keep an eye out for these kinds of crimes. They say the suspect may be linked to other crimes.

According to investigators, suspects in such theft rings work in teams and use techniques to distract people from the thefts as they happen.

“They are often difficult to identify and detect, as they are extremely good at their craft,” said Inspector Keith Bramhill with Richmond RCMP.

“If a theft has been reported, it is largely after the fact. The suspect or suspects have long since vanished with police working hard to play catch up,” he added.

Police are reminding you to keep a close eye on your belongings at the airport and report any suspicious activity right away.
