TILBURY, ONT (680 NEWS) — A five-year-old boy who was the subject of an Amber Alert has been found safe with his mother at a fast food restaurant in Chatham-Kent, police tell CityNews.

Peel police said they were located as a direct result of the Amber Alert, which has since been cancelled.

Police say both were found safe at a Kentucky Fried Chicken in Tilbury at around 5:30 p.m.,nearly 300 km from where they were last seen.

Witnesses told CityNews they saw police block a vehicle at the fast food restaurant, and saw officers put a woman in handcuffs.

There’s no word yet on charges.

The boy and his mom were last seen between 3 p.m. and 4 p.m. in the area of Cawthra Road and Atwater Avenue in Mississauga on Wednesday.

Police say the father reported the pair missing Thursday morning.

Investigators had previously said the boy’s mother had a pre-existing medical condition that makes her act out of character if not treated, and they weren’t sure if she had her medication with her.

“We have information to believe this is out of character for them to go missing for this amount of time,” Const. Iryna Yashnyk said Thursday.
