Emergency crews take control of wildfire west of Lytton, B.C.

LYTTON (NEWS 1130) – Two hectares of scorched earth can be seen from Highway 1 across the Fraser River from Lytton, where firefighters have taken control of a fire that started Thursday night.

B.C. Wildfire Service says the area is still being canvased for leftover hotspots, but note the blaze is not threatening any buildings or people at this time.

Jody Lucius with the BC Wildfire Service says dry conditions in the area are typical this time of year, which is why she says fire preparedness is essential, even as early as April.

And as it continues to get warmer, Jody says concerned homeowners can also prep their home and property for wildfire season.

“So that is looking at the green items like plants, flowers, and things, in the area and assuring that those areas are as fire resistant as possible,” Lucius said. “The placement of those materials can impact whether or not the fire will spread.”

She says people can thin out their trees, remove any low-hanging branches or any flammable materials near their homes.
