BC SPCA identifies person who dumped newborn kittens, which later died

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Someone could face jailtime after two newborn kittens were found abandoned in a Vancouver dumpster earlier this month.

The two cats — believed to be only one day old — were found on April 19 in a dumpster on Pacific Street near Burrard. They died after they were taken to an emergency vet to be treated for dehydration and hypothermia.

The kittens were found inside a plastic bag that, ironically, read, “Love You.” A passerby found the animals after hearing meows coming from the dumpster.

“It is heartbreaking to think that anybody could throw animals in the garbage,” said Eileen Drever with the BC SPCA.

After interviewing several people, the organization believes it has found the person responsible.

The BC SPCA will be recommending charges. “We’ll submit the report to Crown Counsel as soon as it’s completed. It’s then up to Crown whether or not they will proceed with the charge.”

“The maximum penalty under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act is a $75,000 fine and/or imprisonment and/or a prohibition from owning animals — which could be a lifetime prohibition,” she added.
