SURREY (NEWS 1130) – It may be a while longer before we know just how much Surrey’s transition from RCMP to municipal police force will cost, as the report containing the details has been delayed.
The report was supposed to be sent off to the province by the end of April, but Mayor Doug McCallum says it’s a big project that needs time.

The report breaks down the cost, the number of police officers that would be in the force, and a timeline for the transition. Some councillors say the cost will exceed the ten per cent increase over the current RCMP model.
But McCallum says those details will be brought up in a few weeks time.
Just spoke to Mayor Doug McCallum. When I asked if his new police force will just be a 10% increase to current RCMP model, he says “it’ll be in detail in the report going to the govt”. Did not make any promises in terms of staying within budget. @NEWS1130

“Those issues will all be addressed by the report and that should be over to the provincial government in the next twelve days,” he says.
The mayor has still has not seen the report himself, but he says the transition will become clear in time.

“It will be in detail in our report that will be going to the government in the next few days or few weeks,” he says, adding he’s heard the concerns from other councillors who say they’ve been shut out of the project.
McCallum says he does plan to show the report to councillors before sending it off to the province in mid-May.
