Police cracking down on speeders; ICBC says speed is leading case of deadly crashes

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – The beginning of a new month means police will be upping enforcement province-wide — cracking down on speeders, specifically.

“Police will be out in full-force across the province this month looking for drivers who feel the rules don’t apply to them,” said Delta Police Chief Neil Dubord, who is also the chair of the B.C. Association of Chiefs of Police Traffic Safety Committee.

ICBC says speed is still the leading cause of deadly car crashes with 82 people killed in B.C., on average, every year.

According to ICBC, if a pedestrian is hit by a car going 40 km/h, the person has a 90 per cent chance of surviving. But if a pedestrian is hit at a car going 80 km/h, they only have a 50/50 chance of survival.

Here in the Lower Mainland, an average of 26 people are killed each year due to speed-related collisions.
