BURNABY (NEWS 1130) – ICBC wants to know why boxes full of unshredded files containing personal information was left behind when an insurance broker moved offices.

The public insurer says Perpetual Insurance left multiple boxes behind when it changed offices within Metrotown in Burnaby.

While moving in, the new tenant found them and tweeted out a video of the papers, which apparently include full names and banking details.

ICBC says the boxes are being picked up on Friday.

It says it will be looking into what happened, and the investigation will include interviews with brokers and staff.

“Failure to follow appropriate procedure for document handling has disciplinary ramifications that will be assessed after the investigation is complete,” ICBC said in a statement.

It added the Insurance Council of BC has been notified “and may take further disciplinary action.”

“We take the protection of privacy and information very seriously,” ICBC said.

Perpetual Insurance has confirmed to NEWS 1130 that it recently changed offices within Metrotown, but no one has been made available for an interview.
