At least one dead in plane crash near Smithers

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) — Police say a plane crash in northern B.C. Saturday morning was fatal.

At least one person is dead, but Mounties haven’t confirmed how many of the plane’s passengers have died. RCMP officers are still investigating.

The small Cessna 182 plane, capable of carrying four passengers, was found about 100 km outside of Smithers after the wreckage was found by a search and rescue team.

Maritime Forces Pacific say they received a ping from an emergency locator at around 8:45 Saturday morning.

Lt. Tony Wright with the joint rescue coordination centre says a technician was lowered by cable from the helicopter to check for survivors and the operation was handed over to police.

RCMP Cpl. Madonna Saunderson says they know there is at least one fatality, but they are still working on getting people to the crash site.

On Sunday, the Transportation Safety Board deployed a team of investigators to the site.
