BMO Marathon causes road closures in Vancouver

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) — BMO’s Vancouver Marathon is now over, but for drivers, there’s still some slowdowns and closures on the roads.

Roads closed across the city with the half marathon starting at 7 a.m., and the full marathon at 8:30 a.m.

Race Director Eric Chéné said to expect to see barricades up and police directing traffic across the city. He says the biggest thing drivers need to do is plan ahead.

“We are Vancouver’s only marathon. But having said that, a marathon is 40 km of road that we are closing down,” he says. “And we have to do it for [the] safety of all of our runners.”

Chéné says if you need to travel north or south, you should avoid Oak or Cambie. Main Street is the best way to go.

More than 18,000 runners ran in today’s race, from all over the world.
