Local Muslims aim to feed the homeless in Vancouver during Ramadan

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Ramadan is a time of fasting, praying and almsgiving.

The holy month for Muslims in BC starts Monday.

For the next 30 days, there is no eating or drinking from sunrise to sundown.

Tarek Ramadan of the Muslim Contribution Society says for the next few weeks, every weekend they will be providing meals on East Hastings for the homeless.

“We fast for 16 to 17 hours a day. So we feel the hunger of those who can’t help themselves, right?” he notes.

“We’ve had people offering to bring materials, bring food, and donate money. The response has been amazing, actually.”

The society is using restaurant space to prepare the meals, which will be set out on a table on Hastings near Main Street.

“We are aiming to start by Friday or Thursday. We’ll start on a weekday and continue on the weekend.”

He hopes they can feed 250 people per weekend. He estimates they will need about $500 a day to cover expenses.
