Say goodbye to Playland’s ‘Wave Swinger’ and hello to the ‘Sea to Sky Swinger’

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – It’s been a staple at Playland for three decades, but it’s time to say goodbye to the Wave Swinger.

The iconic ride is being replaced by the new “Sea to Sky Swinger.”

Laura Ballance, who speaks for Playland, says the new attraction is very similar to its predecessor. “The look and feel is very similar to that iconic Wave Swinger ride, but it is a brand-new, state-of-the-art Italian-made ride.”

The new ride stands 43 feet, six inches tall and reaches speeds of 11 rpm, spinning counter clockwise.

“This ride actually has some double seats on it — so you can ride sitting with a friend or a family member,” Ballance said, adding the new attraction has an expanded capacity of 64 riders.

“As one of our more popular rides, anytime you can expand capacity means that lineups get shorter.”

She says the Wave Swinger holds a special place in the hearts of many Playland regulars.

“There is no doubt that the Wave Swinger is very well-known and holds a high amount of sentimental value — not only for our guests, but also our staff at Playland. It’s been in the park for several decades and is a real fixture for people of a wide range of ages and abilities.”

The new ride opens on Saturday.

Monday’s announcement came a week after Playland announced its Corkscrew rollercoaster is being put up for sale.
