OTTAWA (NEWS 1130) – The Trudeau government is trying to put a positive spin on the Green Party victory in Monday night’s byelection win in B.C.
The Greens stole the seat in the riding of Nanaimo-Ladysmith from the NDP in what has been described as an upset for more Conservative-leaning candidates.
Paul Manly is just the second Green Party MP to be voted into the House of Commons, and it comes just months before the fall general election.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau believes this result sends his government a message about the environment.
“Canadian are really preoccupied about climate change,” he says. “I think as we see the rise of successful Conservative politicians at the premier level right across the country who don’t believe in taking climate action, it’s going to be really, really important that Canadians pick a government this fall that is committed to climate action.”
However, his comments come as Bloomberg reports the federal government will likely re-approve the controversial Trans Mountain pipeline. Natural Resources Minister Amarjeet Sohi says no final call will be made until after a second round of Indigenous consultations.
“And what decision cabinet makes is entirely up to the cabinet,” he adds.
The project was put on hold due to a court ruling. The deadline for a decision is June 18th
