Langley buzzing with Giants poised to host first home game of championship series

LANGLEY (NEWS 1130) – There are few things that get a community feeling buzzed like a long cup run, and folks in Langley are getting a strong dose of that playoff fever with the Giants set to host the team’s first home game of this season’s WHL championship series Tuesday night, with the series tied 1-1.

The Giants run to this championship series is the talk of the town in Langley, meaning packed bars and restaurants on game nights — and swelling community pride in what the local junior hockey team has done so far.

“I know the restaurants are hard to get into,” says Giants President Ron Toigo. “It’s definitely a huge boom for them and it has been all season, since we moved [to the Langley Events Centre]. Trying to get a seat in a restaurant a couple of hours before a game is difficult.”

And Langley Township Mayor Jack Froese agrees, noting the playoff run is good for more than just business.

“So far, each one of the playoff games have been sold out,” says Froese. “When all those folks come into town, I know they’re using our restaurants, they’re shopping and some are staying at hotels.”

Froese says the playoffs not only bring an economic benefit but they also bring pride to the town.

“We’re certainly looking forward to them over the next three games that will be at home.”

Froese hopes to attend one of the games this week, adding everyone is rooting for the team to go all the way and take home the Memorial Cup.
