Woman reportedly punched by man through window of her car in Surrey

Police are searching for a suspect after an apparent road rage incident in Surrey. Tom Walsh tells us a man pulled up behind another vehicle, got out of his truck, walked up to the driver’s side window and punched the female driver.

SURREY (NEWS 1130) – A scary situation played out for a woman who was driving in Surrey last month, with Mounties saying she was punched in the face by another driver while stopped in an intersection.

The Surrey RCMP says it happened in the area of 152 Street and 64 Avenue around 9:30 p.m. on April 17th.

The female driver was apparently waiting to turn left when a dark-coloured pick-up truck pulled up behind her.

A man is said to have then gotten out of the truck, walked over to the woman’s open driver’s side window, and then punched her. Cpl. Elenore Sturko says the man then walked back to the truck and got in on the passenger side.

“We don’t like to speak to what a person’s motivation was, we’re not going to say whether or not road rage was an incident,” she said. “What we are dealing with is an assault that occurred as a result of a conflict between drivers.”

Mounties have released a composite sketch of the suspect, and are hoping people with information will come forward.

The suspect is described as Caucasian, about 35-36 years old, with a pale/fair complexion. He has sharp facial features, blonde facial stubble, short hair, and is about 5’9″-5’10” tall and weighs about 180-190 lbs with a stocky build.

“Until we’re able to speak to that driver, we won’t know potentially what they’re motivation was,” Sturko said. “However, exiting your vehicle and assaulting someone even as a result of, perhaps, driver frustration is certainly not something that we want to see on our roads.”

She notes this kind of situation is not very common. Despite the serious nature of the incident, it took three weeks for the RCMP to notify the public. According to Sturko, the delay was because investigators were looking at all investigative avenues.

“And also organizing to have witness statements taken and the composite sketch made,” Sturko explained. “We’re hoping that even though it has been several weeks since this assault occured that someone in the community will recognize this individual and be able to come forward to assist us.”

If you have any information and have not spoken to investigators, you’re asked to call the Surrey RCMP at 604.599.0502 or Crime Stoppers at 1.800.222.8477.
