Last section of crumbling Hudson River bridge coming down

TARRYTOWN, N.Y. — The Tappan Zee (TAP’-ehn zee) Bridge will soon be history as crews work to remove the last pieces of the Hudson River span.
New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced the final steps in the bridge’s demolition during a boat tour of the site, about 30 miles (50 kilometres) north of New York City.
The final bridge section was being lowered Friday before they were to be hauled away on barges for disassembly.
The old bridge opened in 1955 to link Westchester and Rockland counties. It underscored America’s aging infrastructure before Cuomo pushed through plans for its replacement, named the Gov. Mario M. Cuomo Bridge after his father, the late governor.
The nearly $4 billion Cuomo Bridge fully opened to traffic last year.
