Public submits mixed messages about Fossil Creek management

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. — The public is sending mixed messages to the U.S. Forest Service about the future of a popular but primitive recreation area in central Arizona, with some people calling for more infrastructure improvements and others expressing concern about losing the wild.

The Arizona Daily Sun reported Friday that Forest Service officials are analyzing the nearly 220 public comments submitted for the development of a long-term management plan of the Fossil Creek area near Camp Verde.

Fossil Creek project manager Marcos Roybal says some people want more parking, restrooms and other infrastructure projects, while others are concerned about the possible negative effects of increasing visitor numbers.

According to agency data, Fossil Creek averages about 4,500 visitors a month within its permitting system.
