Tolko sawmill to permanently close in Quesnel

QUESNEL (NEWS 1130) — The province says it will be providing support to sawmill employees in the Cariboo region who are about to lose their jobs.

Tolko Industries has announced it will be permanently closing its mill in Quesnel, starting in early August.

The province’s forests minister Doug Donaldson says he was disappointed to hear the news.

“I am saddened by today’s news that Tolko will permanently close its Quest Wood sawmill in Quesnel and eliminate a shift at its Kelowna sawmill,” he says in a press release. “The loss of jobs in resource communities is difficult, and my thoughts are with the workers.”

The company says annual cut reductions came earlier than anticipated due to a number of factors – the recent forest fires, poor markets and a dwindling volume of timber damaged by the mountain pine beetle.
