GOP senators question immigration plan presented by Kushner

WASHINGTON — Republican senators are questioning a White House immigration plan presented to them by presidential senior adviser and son-in-law Jared Kushner.

Kushner described his immigration plan as he and other White House officials had lunch Tuesday with GOP senators.

Afterward, Sen. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina said that they seemed “well on their way” to getting a GOP consensus but that he didn’t know if they’d achieve that. He said one area of concern was that while the White House plan would emphasize admitting more immigrants with high-end job skills, the country needs more workers with lower skills, as well.

Moderate GOP Sen. Susan Collins of Maine said the fate of young people brought to the U.S. illegally as children “cannot be excluded” from any immigration plan.
