Nutrien to cut 80 jobs at Vanscoy potash mine, cites soft global market

SASKATOON — Nutrien Ltd. says it plans to cut jobs at its potash operation in Vanscoy, Sask.

Will Tigley, a company spokesman, says the move will take effect in July and is the result of a soft global market.

The cuts will affect 20 staff and 60 hourly workers.

Tigley says production will be increased at lower cost mines and some staff may be moved to these operations.

Capacity at Vanscoy is being reduced from 2.2 million tonnes to 1.7 million.

In March, Nutrien and Mosaic announced that they were unhappy with the Saskatchewan government’s decision to eliminate tax deductions and credits in the province’s budget.

The government said it expects to bring in $117 million more in potash revenue than last year by eliminating the resource credit and deductions.

At the time, the companies said they were not consulted on the change and Nutrien said the government’s move would reduce Canadian competitiveness as the industry deals with rising costs. (CJWW, The Canadian Press)
