Staffer: Illinois newspaper editor resigned to spare layoffs

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. — A staff writer for Illinois’ capital-city newspaper says its editor has resigned to spare more layoffs.

Angie Muhs (MYOOZ’) resigned from The State Journal-Register on Friday. Longtime health writer and union steward Dean Olsen says Muhs told him that part of her reason was to save parent company GateHouse Media money so there wouldn’t be more staff cuts.

Muhs did what editors in Massachusetts and Texas have done in recent years as tough times hit the newspaper industry. The shakeup continued with this month’s sale of The Times-Picayune of New Orleans.

Muhs declined comment on Tuesday. Messages left with GateHouse seeking comment were not returned.

Olsen says a manager escorted Muhs from the building on Monday. Newsroom staff accompanied her as a show of support.

Olsen says there were about 35 editorial employees in 2012. Today, there are about 15.
