Vancouver mayor loses bet, will wear Prince Albert Raiders jersey to council

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – An overtime finish in Monday’s WHL finals in Saskatchewan will see Vancouver’s Mayor sport a Prince Albert Raiders jersey in the near future.

When the Vancouver Giants and Prince Albert Raiders advanced to face each other in the WHL’s finals Stewart was feeling confident in the G-men, and agreed to a wager proposed by Prince Albert’s mayor, Greg Dionne.

It ensured that the losing team’s Mayor would end up having to wear the opposing cites team colours to Council Chambers.

After fighting their way back into the series with two wins that came facing elimination, Vancouver fell just short with a 3-2 overtime Game 7 loss on the road Monday, meaning Stewart will have to wear a Prince Albert Raiders jersey to council.

Dionne clarified the terms of the bet on Tuesday after Stewart arrived to Vancouver Council without his Raiders sweater.

“Well, what I will do is I’ll be packing it [Raiders Jersey] up later this week with a letter I will courier it to him, with a note that will ask him to wear it at his next Council meeting,” says Dionne.

Prince Albert’s Mayor acknowledged that it might be hard to find a Raiders jersey in Giants country but he had a solution.

“That was the bet, that we would send it to each other so I’m arranging it.” Dionne laughed while adding, “I’m actually going to personalize it with his name, that way he can keep it.”

Bets aside, Dionne says he’s impressed with the spirit and hustle from both clubs.

“I am just so proud of the young men from both organizations, because they stayed focused and at the end of the day it’s sad they had to lose especially at that stage. They came back to get game 7 and it was anyone’s game, and a real barn burner for our organization.”

Prince Albert City Council will move to fly the team’s flag outside Prince Albert City Hall for the next year and Dionne will be wearing Raider’s colours until the team returns from the memorial cup in Halifax this week.

Stewart can expect his sweater to arrive sometime next week, according to Dionne.
