The Latest: Pamela Smart denied hearing in husband’s death

CONCORD, N.H. — The Latest on Pamela Smart’s request for a sentence reduction hearing (all times local):

11:35 a.m.

Pamela Smart has again been denied a chance at freedom nearly three decades after she was sentenced to life in prison without parole for recruiting her teenage lover to kill her husband in New Hampshire.

Smart was 22 and working as a high school media co-ordinator when she was accused of plotting with student William Flynn to murder her husband in 1990. She’s now 51. The story inspired the 1995 Nicole Kidman movie “To Die For.”

Smart had sought a sentence reduction hearing before a state council. The council, which declined a similar request 14 years ago, voted 4-0 Wednesday to deny a hearing. One member abstained.

Her appeal options are now exhausted.

Smart denied knowledge of the plot. Flynn and three other youths co-operated with prosecutors and have since been released from prison.

Pamela Smart is again asking for a chance at freedom nearly three decades after she was sentenced to life in prison without parole for recruiting her teenage lover to kill her husband in New Hampshire.

Smart’s story inspired the book and Nicole Kidman film “To Die For.” The now 51-year-old Smart has exhausted her appeal opportunities.

She has petitioned New Hampshire Gov. Chris Sununu and a five-member council that approves government appointments, contracts and pardons to grant her a hearing for parole consideration or reduce her sentence. The council meets Wednesday. It denied a similar request nearly 14 years ago.

Smart, a high school media co-ordinator, was convicted of plotting with student William Flynn to murder Gregory Smart in 1990. She denied knowledge of the plot. Flynn, who shot her husband, co-operated with prosecutors, as did three other youths. They served sentences and were released.

The attorney general’s office opposes her request.
