Journalist killed in Mexican resort of Playa del Carmen

MEXICO CITY — Prosecutors in Mexico’s Caribbean coast state of Quintana Roo say a journalist has been shot to death in the resort town of Playa del Carmen.

Prosecutors confirm that Francisco Romero’s body was found with bullet wounds on a sidewalk in a neighbourhood not frequented by tourists. Romero worked for news pages on Facebook and the web that have apparently been closed for some time.

Romero reportedly worked for one of the same pages as two other Playa del Carmen journalists killed in 2018. Playa del Carmen has suffered increasing violence.

In July 2018, Ruben Pat Cahuich, the director of the online news site Playa News Aqui y Ahora, was killed. In June, police reporter Jose Guadalupe Chan Dzib from the same outlet was killed.
