North Van motorcyclist charged following collision with Mountie

NORTH VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – A North Vancouver man has been charged in connection with a frightening incident which sent an RCMP officer to hospital with serious head injuries in February.

The motorcyclist is accused of slamming into the officer, who was trying to flag him down for speeding.

Sergeant Peter DeVries with North Vancouver RCMP says it happened on Feb. 9.

“Our officers were doing some traffic enforcement up on the Upper Levels highway, just west of the Lonsdale overpass, and a speeding motorcycle approached,” he says. “The officer stepped out to flag the motorcycle down, but the motorcycle didn’t stop and actually struck the officer. As a result, [the officer] hit his head and received a traumatic brain injury.”

Mark Webber, a 27-year-old North Vancouver man, has been charged with obstructing a peace officer and dangerous operation of a motor vehicle.

DeVries is thanking the public for coming forward with information and evidence that helped lead to the charges getting approved.

“With the help of the community, we were able to head in the right direction,” he says.

As for the injured RCMP officer, he is making a gradual return to work after suffering what is described as a serious concussion.

“It was a bit scary for all of us,” says DeVries of the feeling after the crash happened. “Any time somebody has a head injury like that, it can be unsettling, but thankfully he is back to some light duties and he’s gradually getting back to full duties.”

Webber returns to court on May 29.
