Ex-Rebel injures himself in Colombian jail awaiting release

BOGOTA — A former Colombian rebel leader who narrowly dodged extradition to the U.S. on drug charges has injured himself in jail while waiting for court-ordered release.
Prison authorities said Friday that Seuxis Hernández lacerated his arms and was receiving medical treatment inside the maximum security prison in the capital of Bogota where supporters have gathered the past two days. There were no additional details.
A special tribunal investigating war crimes during Colombia’s decades-long civil conflict ruled Wednesday that the former peace negotiator best known by his alias Jesús Santrich should not be extradited to the United States.
The decision triggered the resignation of Colombia’s chief prosecutor and has renewed debate about whether the 2016 peace deal with the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia is too lenient with rebel leaders.
