Cars slip across road in ‘chaotic’ Chilliwack highway crash

CHILLIWACK (NEWS 1130) – A dramatic car crash on Highway 1 in Chilliwack prompted one man to jump into action, pulling a young child to safety after a substance spilled on the road caused cars to slip across the highway on Sunday morning.

Carlos Portillo was driving west on Highway 1 just after 11 a.m. in Chilliwack when his car and others suddenly began slipping.

“Started slipping all over the road, then I saw this car in front of me slip into the ditch,” he says.

Portillo was able to pull over and ran to the flipped car, where he found a mother and her young child inside. He says while the mother was able to get out, she was struggling to get her child to safety.

“I grabbed the baby, got him out of the vehicle, got them off up on top of the road and then when we looked behind us, there is more vehicles slipping and sliding, everywhere just hitting the median,” Portillo says.

According to another driver, Brendan Kroeker, there was what appeared to be an oil spill on the road which caused the dangerous conditions.

“I slammed on my brakes and it took probably like 300, 400 feet for me to stop,” Kroeker says. “There was a very noticeable smell of oil.”

Teneesha Kroeker says cars were sent spinning along the highway, and the scene was chaotic.

“It looked like it was from a horror movie,” she says. “There was a car in front of us doing a 360 with other cars diverting from it. There was about 15 cars involved.”

It’s still not clear what the cause of the possible leak was, or if anyone was injured.
