Lost hikers on Cypress Mountain rescued

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – It was a long night for members of North Shore Rescue on Friday. The unit’s Jeff Yarnold says they were dispatched at 10 p.m. to look for two missing hikers on the Baden Powell Trail and it wasn’t until 3 a.m. on Saturday that they were rescued.

“They were going for a hike, they just bit off more than they could chew,” he says. “They’re out here for a couple of weeks and they’re planning to do a lot of hiking.”

Yarnold says they activated their locator beacon when they got lost.

“Luckily they stayed put but it took hours for our crews to access them. I was one of the rescue leaders in the ground crew going in and it’s just very challenging,” he says. “They were cold, they weren’t prepared to be out there for the night. They really had no idea where they were.”

Yarnold says by staying put and using their locator beacon, the hikers did the right thing.

Over the May long weekend, a family from the state of Georgia had to be rescued from Burke Mountain in Coquitlam.
