People with dash-cam footage of bad drivers could be rewarded by ICBC: Farnworth

VICTORIA (NEWS 1130) – Victoria is mulling over an idea that would potentially see good drivers rewarded for catching bad drivers on camera.

The push is being made by a Burnaby man who would like to see people rewarded when giving dash-cam footage to ICBC of poor or dangerous driving behaviour. One of the ideas suggested is for such drivers to receive a break on their ICBC premiums the following year.

Solicitor General Mike Farnworth said he was given some information about this proposal on Monday and although he’s not confirming if or when it could become reality — it’s not off the table.

“It’s certainly something that, you know, we’d be willing to look at to see you know how feasible it is or if it’s possible,” he added. “I always think it’s great when people do forward suggestions and ideas for how we can deal with different issues.”

Farnworth said the government is “perfectly willing” to explore the idea.

Attorney General David Eby agreed, noting this could be incredibly helpful in certain investigations.

“I think it’s certainly useful for police if people have dash-cam footage of offences that are taking place that they share that with police,” he added.
