15 neglected dogs seized from breeder in Chilliwack area: BC SPCA

CHILLIWACK (NEWS 1130) – The BC SPCA says it’s now working to provide 15 badly neglected dogs with emergency care after carrying out a seizure on Wednesday at a property in Chilliwack’s Rosedale area.

The dogs range in age from about one year to 14-years-old, and were suffering from a number of medical and grooming issues, including matted fur caked in feces and urine. One of the dogs is also pregnant.

Other problems include painful eye and ear infections, dental disease, hair loss and skin infections. Some had dramatically overgrown nails.

Marcie Moriarty is the society’s Chief Prevention and Enforcement Officer and says the first priority will be to provide much-needed emergency care to the Bichon Frise-type dogs, who are being looked after at SPCA locations across the Lower Mainland.

“Taking in this number of dogs puts an incredible strain on our resources and we really always appreciate the public’s support in these cases.”

The property where the animals were seized is also known to them, and animal cruelty-related charged will likely be laid.

“We had a call back in 2016 but at that time, the situation was rectified, so there was no legal basis to remove [the] animals.”

She notes cases like these are a reminder there is still more work to be done to protect animals.

“Puppy mills and substandard breeders continue to be a serious animal welfare issue in B.C. and this case highlights the urgent need for breeder regulations to monitor this industry.”

The issue of breeder regulations is currently being looked at by the Province.

The dogs, in this case, will not be up for adoption at this time, and if you’d like to help, you can find the BC SPCA’s medical emergency page.
