Speeder who killed Vancouver doctor found guilty, acquittal overturned

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) — A man who had been acquitted in the 2015 crash death of a Vancouver doctor has been found guilty.

The B.C. Court of Appeal overturned a ruling that had acquitted Ken Chung of killing Dr. Alphonsus Hui’s when their vehicles collided on Oak Street near Oakridge Mall. Chung has now been found guilty of dangerous driving causing death.

Chung’s speeding Audi, going 140 km/h in a 50 km/h zone, crashed into Hui’s Suzuki in 2015.

Relief for victim’s family

While she can’t say she’s happy about her father’s killer has now been found guilty, Monique Hui says she and her family are relieved.

“My father is still dead, and our community is still at a loss for a great humanitarian who did nothing but kindness in his time on earth, his time that was cut short, so that is still extremely devastating, but that being said, can I say we are extremely relieved that finally justice has been served,” she says.”It was done right this time. There is a step forward or justice.”

She says she felt jaded by the justice system after Chung was acquitted by a provincial court last year, so she was keeping her expectations low.

When Chung was pronounced guilty Friday, she was shocked.

“I must say that I was completely relieved, surprised, and I just feel like finally my family can have a good night’s sleep after three-and-a-half years of complete torture,” she says. “It was better than we were hoping for.”

Now she says her family might be able to find some closure.

“I just feel like finally my family can have a good night sleep tonight after three-and-a-half years of complete torture,” she says. “The difficult thing for the past four years, not just dealing with the loss of our father, also just the wound that never heals with this ongoing legal issue, and that Chung was acquitted last year –it just re-traumatized our family all over again.

“Were hoping to start moving on finally and start the real bereavement process sin a clear, forward way, and hopefully with no more curve-balls.”

Chung has not yet been sentenced.
