Fed up with secrecy, thousands in Surrey sign petition to keep RCMP

SURREY (NEWS 1130) – Questions remain over Surrey’s transition to a police force, as the public waits for details of the report to be released. Some are frustrated with the lack of information and have started a petition against a municipal police force.

The online petition to “Keep the RCMP in Surrey” has more than 5,000 signatures of support.

“The cost of implementing a whole new force would be fiscally irresponsible, when many people are already struggling to keep their homes,” the petition says.

A big question that remains unanswered is just how much the change could cost taxpayers and what exactly the force would look like.

Earlier this week, Public Safety Minister Mike Farnworth said the transition is complicated and it will take time before details are released.

“This is not an exercise that’s just going to happen overnight. This is a 200 page document dealing with the very complex issues around policing,” he said. “We’re going to take the time that’s needed to do the job thoroughly and properly. I’m not putting an artificial timeline on how long that’s going to take.”

Last month, Surrey Mayor Doug McCallum claimed he wanted to make the report public immediately, but couldn’t do so without the green light from the province.
