CALGARY (660 NEWS) – The Mayor of Calgary would like to see the UCP government wrap up its review of drug safe consumption sites sooner than later.

“I’m hopeful that we can do this expeditiously and that the call for a review of these sites isn’t just an excuse to delay these sites forever,” said Naheed Nenshi.

Nenshi said without these sites the opioid crisis will continue to get worse.

“People are going to die. It’s as simple as that. The question is, how many deaths are you willing to live with?”

People living near some of the existing locations, especially the Sheldon Chumir site, have noticed a spike in crime and have called for increased police presence.

Premier Jason Kenney promised a review before the last provincial election.

There are no details yet on a timeline or what the review will look like. Those details are expected within the next few weeks.

In the meantime, it means proposed sites are on hold, including a mobile location for Calgary.
