Richmond banning use of glitter at arts centre

By

RICHMOND, B.C. (NEWS 1130) – Richmond is about to get a little less sparkly as the city has decided to limit the use of glitter.

It’s being temporarily suspended at the Richmond Arts Centre, and not only because of how hard it is to clean up, explains Ted Townsend, who works for the city.

“While it may seem innocuous, it’s quite highly toxic and can be damaging to the environment.”

Townsend says a resident art group at the centre has voiced concerns about the use of glitter, and this could lead to a wider ban.

“Once we’ve researched it and taken a look at it in terms of at the arts centre, then it would be something that we would take a look at other facilities as well,” he says. “And we’re researching some alternatives that can take its place, but be less of an environmental impact.”

Starting June 24, glitter use will be temporarily suspended at the Richmond Arts Centre as the city looks for earth-friendly alternatives.
