Man arrested, charged after at least five people hurt in alleged ‘unprovoked’ punching spree

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – At least five people were reportedly hurt last week in what Vancouver police are calling a series of unprovoked assaults near Waterfront Station.

According to police, officers received reports of a man randomly punching people near the SeaBus terminal at Waterfront Station just before 8:30 p.m. on Tuesday, May 28.

The VPD says, with the help of several good Samaritans, officers were able to find the suspect and arrest him.

Stuart Schneider, 32, has been charged with three counts of assault, one count of assault causing bodily harm, and one count of robbery.

According to investigators, the alleged assaults are believed to have been random.

“We don’t have a motive at this point,” says Vancouver Police Sergeant Jason Robillard.

One man, a 37-year-old from Burnaby, was taken to hospital to be assessed. Four other people were apparently treated by B.C. Emergency Health Services for what police describe as minor injuries.

Police search for more possible victims

Meantime, police say they believe there are other possible victims who haven’t spoken with investigators.

“Maybe they didn’t think it was serious, maybe they weren’t seriously injured, maybe they didn’t know… that there were other victims, maybe it wasn’t worth their time, I’m not sure,” Robillard says.

Anyone who may have witnessed anything is asked to contact the VPD’s Major Crime Section at 604.717.2541. Anyone with information can also contact Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1.800.222.8477.
