VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) — It’s a big honour for people in Vancouver originally from Italy or with parents and grandparents from the old country.
During a ceremony at City Hall, Mayor Kennedy Stewart formally recognized the contribution of Italian immigrants.
“Now, therefore, I Kennedy Stewart, Mayor of the City of Vancouver do hereby proclaim the month of June 2019 as Italian Heritage Month.”
Stewart had a little trouble announcing the theme of this year’s annual Italian Day celebration on Commercial Drive –‘communita’ which translates to community in English.

“From Italian immigrants to the new generation of Italo-Canadians. Hence, the fitting theme for this year communi-ha-ta, community…communita, thank you!”
Friday’s proclamation included comments from the Consul General of the Republic of Italy Massimiliano Iacchini, as well as performances by members of the City Opera and father-son duo Federico and Gianni Fuocco.
