Transportation Minister wants class four licences for ride-hailing

VICTORIA (NEWS 1130) – In a letter to the Passenger Transportation Board, Transportation Minister Claire Trevena makes it clear she didn’t support the recommendation that drivers only need a class five license when working for a ride-hailing company.

She says this is part of her job to make sure people are safe when using ride-hailing services once they come to the province.

“Vancouver Police Department has acknowledged that this is the safest licence,” Says Trevena. “We have others who have come out very clearly saying it’s the safest licence. And we have other jurisdictions who use a similar sort of licence,” says Trevena.

Ride-hailing laws are already making their way through the legislature, and cities won’t be able to completely prevent companies from operating in their municipalities.

She expects the regulations will be out next month with ride hailing in place before the end of the year.
