Cities not able to block ride-hailing in B.C.

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Whenever ride-hailing does arrive here in B.C., individual cities won’t be able block the service from operating.

The final word lies with province’s Passenger Transportation Safety Board, who will have control over vehicle supply and operation areas for ride-hailing and taxi services.

Anita Huberman, chair of the Surrey Board of Trade, says they asked for clarification from the Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure Claire Trevena on what rights cities have when it comes to ride-hailing within their city limits.

“We know it’s coming from the minister later this year,” says Huberman. “We just wanted to make sure that there’s no way to prevent ride-hailing from operating in any way across the Metro Vancouver or B.C. province”

Cities will still be able to regulate ride-hailing in their areas, such as controlling where and how vehicles able to pick up and drop off customers.

Huberman says this is good news, but recognizes there will still be a feeling out process when the province finally brings in ride-hailing later this year.
