VPD arrest man in violent West End home invasion

A 29-year-old woman remains in hospital with serious injuries after a violent home invasion in downtown Vancouver.

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Vancouver police have arrested a 50-year-old man in connection to a violent break and enter in the city’s West End Friday morning that left a 29-year-old woman in the hospital with serious injuries.

Paul Doczi was taken into custody Saturday night after an officer recognized him.

“During the course of the investigation there was some information shared between officers and the officers used that information to make the arrest,” VPD Sgt. Jason Robillard said. “Our officers did recognize the man as being the suspect from that home invasion.”

Doczi is charged with aggravated assault, break and enter, and theft. He’s accused of breaking into the woman’s apartment on Beach Ave. near Jervis St. through an unlocked patio door and attacking her. The woman, who was home alone at the time, was taken to the hospital with what police initially described as injuries caused by a “blunt force object.”

Police are not saying what caused the woman’s injuries, if she remains in hospital, if she was targeted or if they know the motive, but believe this was an isolated incident.

A number of items were stolen from the house.

Doczi has an “extensive” criminal history according to VPD, including violent crimes.

Robillard said additional charges relating to theft are expected in the future.

Doczi is in custody and and will be back in court June 28.
