Coroner’s inquest into overdose death of Victoria teen underway

VICTORIA (NEWS 1130) – A coroner’s inquest is now underway into the death of a 16-year-old boy from Victoria who passed away from an apparent opioid overdose last year.

Elliot Eurchuk, 16, was found unresponsive on his bed at his family’s home last April. The inquest will review the circumstances of his death and allow a jury to make recommendations that may prevent similar events from happening in the future.

Eurchuk’s parents have called for an inquest since his death saying they felt trapped by a medical system that didn’t give them a say in their son’s painkiller prescriptions.

The parents believe Eurchuk may have become addicted to prescription painkillers after four surgeries in the span of a year. The parents wanted alternatives but were told their son was old enough to make his own medical decisions.
