VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – The Vancouver Aquarium is releasing 1,600 endangered frogs into the wild next week as part of its ongoing conservation efforts.

The release of the recently-hatched Oregon spotted frogs, will mark the 10-year anniversary of the aquarium’s breeding program, which works in conjunction with the Oregon Spotted Frog Recovery Team.

The breed is the most endangered amphibian in Canada, and has been in rapid decline in British Columbia and along the Western coast of the United States for years. The aquarium has raised and released around 21,000 tadpoles since the breeding program began.

The Vancouver Aquarium is also part of a worldwide effort to conserve other amphibian species under the Amphibian Ark project.

Editor’s Note: This article has been updated to clarify that the frogs have not yet been released.
